The Republic of Hungary is located in Central Europe and is surrounded by mountains on almost all sides. With the fall of the Iron Curtain, it developed as a free democracy. After various reforms, it became an independent state with a market economy in 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Population<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Hungarian population is quite homogeneous. According to the 2001 census, ethnic Hungarians make up 92% of the population. The largest minority group is the Roma (\u201cGypsies\u201d), numbering between 400,000 and 600,000 Hungarians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social and economic situation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Although Hungary’s economic status has stabilized and the upper middle class has opportunities to advance, about 1\/3 of the population still lives in poverty and hundreds struggle daily to meet the basic necessities of life. The lower middle class and the periphery are getting poorer by the day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation of Roma\/Gypsies in society is difficult and has only worsened since the fall of communism. The level of education is low, unemployment is high. There is a vicious circle of poverty, crime and discrimination here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

96% of companies in Hungary are SMEs (less than 10 employees), a higher percentage than in most OECD countries. The majority of these belong to the craft and retail sectors. Entrepreneurial capacity is limited. There is also a lack of practical and relevant innovation and too little knowledge about dealing with finances.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
